Veritatem: Explainable AI for Early Risk Assessment of Gestational Diabetes
As part of the course, students developed Veritatem, a concept for an AI-based Clinical Decision Support System that assesses the risk of gestational diabetes during the first trimester of pregnancy. The project illustrates how technological innovation can be combined with economic, legal, and regulatory considerations in a practical healthcare application. Veritatem uses data that is routinely collected during early pregnancy, including age, BMI, medical history, and laboratory values, to classify patients into different risk tiers. Unlike many black-box AI models, the system is designed to be fully explainable. It clearly identifies the factors influencing a patient’s risk assessment and links the results to evidence-based clinical recommendations, such as earlier glucose tolerance testing, lifestyle counseling, or more frequent monitoring.
