AI systems and the risk of manipulative AI
This project examines whether a landmark California jury verdict against Meta and Google—holding the companies liable for designing addictive recommendation algorithms and platform features that harmed a young user's mental health—could have been assessed differently under the EU AI Act. By focusing on product design and algorithmic engineering rather than user-generated content, the case bypassed traditional platform immunity defenses. The project explores whether similar systems could qualify as prohibited AI practices under the EU AI Act and analyzes the potential legal and regulatory consequences.
